  • Perhaps digging out my greenhouse base wasn't such a good idea...

I did have stabalising fabric down, and pea gravel on top for my greenhouse base. My house is an ex-showhome, and the garden that I have my greenhouse in is a bit of land on the side of my house, which the builders must have chucked all the left over rubble, sand, clay earth etc on, then covered it with top soil and turf.

So anyway, I started to dig it out - really difficult job. Went to put my chickens away last night, and popped in the greenhouse. Saw this where I had been digging:

    Great!!

Edit: the depth of the hole is two spits deep.

Crikey Chris - that doesn't look great does it. Absolutely no idea what to suggest (other than fill it all back in) but I'm sure someone knowledgeable will be along soon to give you better advice!

        did you hit a pipe?

Has there been mining in the area? We have had roads subside locally.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Actually chris- that would make me wonder what the ground is like near your foundations!
            Is it a new(ish) build?

Might be worth showing your insurance company- they may say you need drainage pipes away from your house. (The builders may have to pay for that)

              What about keeping ducks?
The rainfall was very heavy yesterday - was it seeping in and unable to drain out?
If you bailed it out would it fill up again?
Lots of questions and absolutely no answers - but I'm gutted for you!

Sorry forgot to say a key thing..

It's been hammering it down. The ground has terrible drainage, I've watched it run into the greenhouse, then down into the hole. Not sure if I should fill it all back in, or if it'd drown the tomatoes that I was planning on planting in there!!

There are no pipes around there (I've the plans) - it's a new-ish build (15years old).

                    That looks like sewer water.
And I can see part of a brown pipe on the top left of the green house.
I have a bad feeling, sorry

Looks like a plant pot to me. Chris, is your greenhouse set to run water in that direction from the gutter. If you haven't already got a butt attached the lashing we had overnight may just be from the gutter and leaked into the GH. I wouldn't panic just yet. Pour some water into the gutter and watch where it goes. Good luck pal.

I agree or drain it and see if it refills.

I toyed with that idea but then looked again and noticed that if a pipe had been hit, the water would be higher. Unless of course it was only over a short period of time.
