  • polythene sheet for tomato frame

hi i've build a tomato frame and to avoid they get wet and get blight already i was thinkin a some plythene sheet as cover ( zazen tomato frame) i went to b&q and they have some but look like a dust sheet... i looked online and i found this but i don't know how thick is 220 gauge... i know a proper one is about 720 gauge and considered that i grow in my garden and maybe next year i will buy a greenhouse i was looking something cheap for this year...

I want to know about this too. What gauge is strong enough and lets the light through?

the first time i grew toms (30 yrs ago) i bought one tomato plant on impulse at the garden center and a grow bag i then went home and knocked together a wooden frame just a bit bigger than the growbag and 5ft tall, covered it with some poly sheeting i dragged out of a skip on an industrial estate it had a roll up door held down with bricks . i never side shooted the plant as i didnt know about such things but the results were exellent plenty of red ones and loads of green for chutney i would just use the cheapest available trial and error over the years ive knocked up all sorts of grow houses out of lots of differant materials and they all worked

I'm using the heavy gauge polythene and it seems to be ok as a grow house material. Even if it only does for one season I would say that it represents good value for money.

I've just bought some 500 gauge to make a tomato hoop house. It is not as thick as polytunnel covering but seems fine for a summer tunnel. Hopefully it should last a few seasons - wind permitting!
