I built 8 3ft high 8ft by 4ft raised beds on the plot, filled em and covered em with thick black plastic, so as to keep the weeds out/down and let the rotting horse poop fully breakdown and gett into the soil.
I have gradually cut patches out of the plastic for planting in until I had to take it off alltother when the bed is full.
Poor little ants have done a cecking job of turnign hte soil into a fine silth in every bed, then I have come along and dampened them, washed them out and they have moved on, larvae and all. (still dont work out how on earth them little ants can (a) evolve from larvae twise their size or (b) give birth to them bloody things).
Pretty much each new bed I have started to plant in they have moved to.
Feel really bad for them.
considering soem kind of ant farm for them somewhere if anyone has any experience orf advice.
But I digress !!!!!
in answer to VirginVegGrower - I have found a simple soaking has forced them to leave - if you wanna rid the place, boil some water.
Hmmm...I'm watering in there daily. Maybe it's just too hot in there although with this weather...I'll keep watering. It appears to be on the legume side only. Are ants vegetarians?

Our garden is full of them and they seem to not do too much damage so far, only one tomato plant struggled and I found a nest underneath it. Don't think you can irradiate them outside!
The big bonus is the beautiful green woodpecker that comes to feed on them.
Yep! I've got the little perishers in my rockery, raised garden,But the worst lot are in the lawn! I even bought some ant killer in a tin, but to no avail. Then a pro. gardener told me that you need to dig into the ant heap or whatever, bring to nest into day light...then put the ant killer on before re-covering then you lose your ants.
