Greenhouse advice

Hi

I moved my greenhouse at the weekend and lost 5 panes of glass in the process!

Would it be ok to tape up some thick clear plastic until i have the time / money to replace them?

Sort of a greenhouse / polytunnel hybrid

You want to see some of the greenhouses on our allotment site! Some are evolving into sheds with plywood used where a pane gets broken. I can't forsee any problems in the short term with using plastic!

My greenhouse has quite a few pains missing it still got to 40c last week& I have used blue plastic(recycled)

It's got to be a lot better than it missing a panel, go for it.

I've got a panel or two missing on one side - propped up one of those large sheets of wavy plastic - it's been like that since last year - one day, maybe one day, will get round to sorting it out!

You can buy rolls of heavy duty cellotape for fixing broken glass back into one piece. It also works fine on just about any solid material you want to fix. Why not replace the broken panes with acrylic sheet, you can buy sheets of it from B+Q and cut it yourself to size.

Glass is about £3 a sheet from our local glass merchant (2ft x 2ft) but if you keep your eyes open someone may have some to get rid of, a local nursary to us had some for 50p a sheet , you just had to scrape the putty off

Thanks for the advice. Will use plastic and keep an eye out for a bargain on the glass - or acrylic!

How about putting a WANTED ad on Free Cycle.
Last week I put on a Wanted Ad for small pots (for charity sale goodies). I got nearly 500 from one lady. So it's worth a shot

When my greenhouse door blew off an smashed into little slithers (well past repair) I replaced with acrylic sheet. Boy did we have fun cutting it!!
I was warned off old glass as it goes brittle & is easily shattered when trying to cut to size, new glass was too pricey So we used acrylic sheet.
It needs scoring several times really hard with a sharp stanley knife then snapping over something like glass. Was a job & a half but we managed. I think lots of people us plastic as glass is expensive.
