  • Greenhouse 'flooring' query

I am sure this has been covered somewhere but I have just spent ages reading posts to try and answer my question first.

Madmax has very kindly finished the building and glazing of our 6 x 8 greenhouse. The question is this:

We dug off the turf and levelled the soil then covered it with weed control fabric as it is on a weedy area of the garden. The intention is to put some paving slabs up the centre and gravel round the rest. However, the ground was a little softer than we realised and now has some shallow depressions. Is it okay to level it off with sand then put the slabs/gravel on top or is this not a good idea in the greenhouse?

    Thanks all.

    Hi Shirl,

I have just put up an 8x6 polycarbotante gh.

The ground was very uneven so flattened it out a bit and put down weed control fabric. I used builders sand to help even the slabs out and left a 2cm gap between the slabs for drainage.

Been up 2 weeks now and seems to be doing the job.

    Hope that helps, Mandy

Oh they are bliss! First season with mine and its such a joy.

Flooring - my floor was very uneven so it was built up with builders sand before the gravel went in. I didn't go for slabs down the middle just gravel all over. Not quite sure why know!

Still undecided as to the combination of sand, gravel and slabs - interested to hear your views Jennie since you seem to have done much the same as we intended. If you were doing it again, would you 'floor' it the same way?

Trouble with gravel or pea shingle is it sticks in the bottom of your boots, gets inside your sandals and TRAVELS! It's great for borders in the greenhouse, as long as you're not planning to plant straight into the ground, but I would always go for some sort of hard surface down the middle so you can get to things easily.

Thanks Rustylady - might stick with the original idea of some paving slabs laid 'stepping stone' fashion down the middle then with gravel each side.

If we hadn't done the weed fabric thing we would prolly have a greenhouse full of cherry suckers before we looked round twice!

Yes I think I would do it again. My greenhouse is 10 x 8 and I wasn't sure where I would want to put the staging, I can if I want put it along the back or either or both sides. I suppose I really wanted the flexibility. We have gravel, but then the same gravel in a landscaped area in the front which I am making into a sitter-ooterie. The greenhouse is also a sitter-innerie so its nice to have the space too for a chair. So we don't really have a problem in terms of spreading it around.

Your OK just laying the gravel on the sides but I would think about making a solid path out of concrete. If you just put sand under your slabs it will be nice and warm & dry and you'll get over run with ants and stuff will grow between them where you drop compost etc so put som eshuttering up and make a continuous path. thet is level on the top & all shapes underneath. So of the concrete will probably seep through the membrane and help bind it to the soil as well.
