  • advice needed on which netting to buy

I have a frame of a old DI Y greenhouse that i have modified to put netting over and then set it over my brassica to stop all them bugs getting to them and eating them

I need 5m x 4m netting to cover the frame i have been looking at two types the first is
Butterfly netting and the second is insect netting what one should i go for as the insect netting only comes in 5m x 2m . I rang the firm that was selling the butterfly netting and the say that it will do the same job keep all insects out but i think there wrong so some help needed please.

Look up "Debris Netting" David or ask around any local scaffolders.

As BM say's ^^^ this .... NETTING is what I used on my fruit cage with butterfly netting on the door (to let the hoverflies, etc in to polinate). If you have an allotment society nearby they may well be able to sell you the correct length, although it does have a miriad of lateral uses, summer shading for the greenhouse, windbreak for the veg patch, flying rat & flutterby protection for your barassica's,etc

Ask the supplier to send you a sample of the butterfly netting. You will then be able to make a proper judgement as to whether it is suitable. What insects are you trying to exclude and from what crops?

                - Cabbage white caterpillars ~ yes it does, but you'd need to sew up the holes by hand, and it comes in 2m width so you'd be sewing two widths together to make your 4m (tedious)

                - slugs & snails: will always get in, whatever netting you use

                - whitefly & mealy aphid: again, they'll get in whatever netting you use.

Me, I've gone for debris netting, it's the cheapest of the lot and works well (so long as you sew up those black holes)

It also comes in 3m width, with a bit of stretching I guess you could make it 4m.

If you know anyone handy with a sewing machine David, sew 2 x 3mt widths together and at the same time sew up the holes.

You'd need to select a proper good sewing thread though: the normal polyester threads snap too easily for outside use.

An invisible one might work, or I use a superstrong poly thread for my nets (it's cheap enough)
