  • green house growing

ok so once i was thinking about various ways to do things at my allotment since i have been off my feet for a week now i have had time to put some thought into my plot for next years growing

im going to go with 2 x 8x6 green houses and what my question is
what fruit/veg would you never grow outside if you had the choice?

ie things that you can grow outside but thrive in the green house i know alomost everything thrive in there but there has to be some crops that increase there yeild 10 fold in there? as im just trying to plan what im going to put in there next year

boredom and organisation both play parts in this thread hell if i could 75% on my plot would be undercover moreso if this years rain is the start of summer trends

Tomatoes, definitely. I've never had much luck with outdoor toms. I don't grow peppers or aubergines but I expect they would be happier indoors too.
Why are you thinking of 2, 8x6 greenhouses? Why not one larger one? Just curious.........

      good question VC
I would love a bigger one and it would make alot more sense!

However my plot is on a hill and it has beds that have been dug into steps/layers at a depth of around 18 inches i have two areas that i could fit one 6x8 then the land dips 18inches then i have room for another that then leaves the greenhouse on a flat surface

I understand the difficulties of a steep site Will one GH cast a shadow on the other?

that is where im lucky as there is the step, where my plot is and the direction of the sun i think i can get away with them being next to each other

Tomatoes, sweet peppers, chillies, cucumbers, maybe melons. Greenhouses are also good for starting stuff off in modules for planting out later.

rustylady i am definately going to utilise half of one for seedlings as i promised my wife i would not start them off on the window sills..............However if i start them on window sills then i have more room for growing on but.................sssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh dont tell the wife

Indoors for seedlings is good, D, as you need to keep an eye on them
They can go to the allotment later when they are more self-sufficient
(Of course we won't tell )

To me two GHs would make a lot of sense as you can create two different enviroments. Take cumbers for instance they do far better in a moist atmosphere whilst toms do better in a drier atmosphere.

Would you consider a polytunnel? You would get a huge amount of space for the price of even one greenhouse let alone two. I've read about cucumbers and tomatoes needing different environments but am always reading about both coexisting just fine in a tunnel/greenhouse. Both have done really well for me this year, albeit my first year with the tunnel.
Some other things that I noticed did much better undercover are peas and french beans. Indeed most things will grow faster and healthier under cover than out in the elements. I'd love to put the whole plot under plastic

yes i would consider polytunnel however i still would need two as i cannot secure them due to the who plot being on levels do you think that i would get away with two tunnels? how long will these last?

Sorry I can't visualise how your plot looks but I know tunnels can be built on slopes. Have a look here about half way down...
                        FAQ's

The frames will last forever. The plastic is typically garaunteed for 5 years or so but in most cases providing it is installed correctly and you dont rip it people still have them 10 years and more. They're not easy to rip btw

I know nothing about polytunnels (or the actual layout of your plot) but, would it be possible to build up the lower terrace on the outer edge, so that the polytunnel could span both terraces, but rest on a supporting "wall" on the low side?

this is roughly what i got it to before my op i did manage to cover it too the greenhouse/polytunnel would be placed at the bottom of my shed on the right of the picture it is slightly steeper that side hope this make sense i will try to see if i have one purely of that side
