  • Overwintered onions and garlic in the tunnel

I planted these outdoors last year. Onions were great, garlic was a complete flop.
So to try something new I've planted them in the tunnel this week and hopefully the garlic (Christo) will come good.
My question is to those who have done this before. How much earlier do you think these will be? Ideally I'd like to put my toms and peppers in after these are harvested. So I'm hoping you say they can be lifted in early June
    Thanks!

I'll be interested in this answer as I too have put garlic, shallots and onions in mine, as an experiment hoping for rust free and earlier crops.

I just read that garlic is considered a "heavy feeder" so wants lots of old manure or rich compost down where it's roots will be. Could that be why yours didn't work?

I dont think so to be honest. They got bad rust and removing the leaves weakened them at the tome when thez were supposed to bulb up
              But thanks

I grow onions and garlic in my greenhouse over last winter (2011-2012). Used them April/May I think. That's about 8 weeks earlier than for the outside garlic. Can't say about the onions as I had to replant in the spring.

Fantastic, thanks. Looks like they will be out in good time to make room for the tender crops.

I've run out of room on the plot for the rest of my elephant garlic, so I'm going to try them over winter in 9cm pots in the greenhouse. Will be a bit of an experiment for me too!
