  • Help please, advice on a greenhouse purchase

    Hello

I am currently looking for a new greenhouse to add to my garden, and I have been growing vegetables and fruit for two years.

Ideally I am looking for a 8x6 greenhouse either polycarbonate or strengthened plastic
as I have already built the concrete base for the project

The greenhouses I have found from norfolk greenhouses or the 8x6 Gardsman have bad reviews from people, which state they are too hard to erect and the bolts snap in strong wind. Being from Wales the greenhouse must be sturdy

so I'm looking for advice on what to buy, I have a budget of £270 which will include the delivery and the bottom of the greenhouse

You might get a polytunnel for that? They can be sited on concrete, and the polythene secured with timber battens. Have a look at all the various suppliers and see whats what; I know First Tunnels have a discount at the moment so the others probably do too A tunnel is usually better able to withstand the wind than a polycarb greenhouse.

The bolts must be really cheap to snap in the wind. Besides, you could always buy better bolts?

Polycarb would be better fixed in with silicone or similar, as if there's a gust that does get in the GH it'll probably pop the panels out. I've had it done with glass (my garden is pretty much a wind tunnel).

I wouldn't expect bolts to snap either in fact the frame would be more liable to bend out of shape than that.

I purchase my 8 x 6 extra high polycarbonate GH from waltons.co.uk some 3 to 4 years ago. They are now £279-95p including base and delivery.

Good points. Delivery was spot on. The frames have grooves to slide the poly panels into so with a little silicon I have never had a panel 'pop' out. The frame is well made and quite strong.

Bad points. The instructions are dire, fortunately every piece of the frame is numbered and the diagrams are reasonably clear. Allow more time for erecting the GH than the instructions suggest. During the build the frame work does not get its full strength until the build is complete and could be damaged unless you take care. You will need to secure the structure really well as it is very light and in a wind would become a sail.

Yes there are more than enough holes in the base provided. I secured mine with 4 55mm long x 6mm
screws along each side and 2 on each end.
