  • Sturdy but small greenhouse?

Does anyone know if you can get something like those plastic tomato mini greenhouses but made abit more solidly??
My garden is only 10ft wide and I dont want to take up space with a 4ft wide greenhouse when I can get the same growing space with a couple of mini greenhouses along the fenceline. I have one of the cheap plastic ones now but it seems like the covers only last a year ( mine has split down the sides and has cat claw holes in the top!).
What I really need is something like a coldframe.....but the other way up!!LOL
    any ideas??

Flo (Florence fennel) has something a lot like this, she calls it her 'stay put' because its supposed to not blow away :-

Why not try to get hold of a second hand greenhouse and cut it down to the widthdepth you want?

I turned a largeish blow away into a more 'stay put' type on my allotment using some polycarbonate sheeting taken off of a lean to.

A similar theory to the one on amazon but not as pretty to look at!

I'm just using it to dry stuff at the moment but if I decide to use it to grow some bits in later in the year I'll add some more polycarbonate sheeting to the front.

Those sort of things are available, Harrod Horticultural have some, but rather costly. You are probably better off with the ones you have and the outlay for a new cover every year or two.

              Thanks for the suggestions!
I might try the Wilko one..the cover looks more sturdy then the one Ive got now and it is quite cheap!!(always a bonus!).

It's a nice size and the frame is fairly story. The cover is a bit more robust than the really thin plastic one's but it's not long before the little squares of plastic fall out sadly!

I have a balcony that's on the 4th floor and has a mesh base. I've been thinking about getting one of these mini greenhouse things but am wary that air coming up from underneath will a)undermine the purpose of using a greenhouse by letting in cool air though that might not be relevant at this time of year and b) turn the entire structure into a sail.
So wondering about ways to keep the structure strapped down. & or put a bottom under it. What would be the best thing to use? Sorry, maybe I should have started a different thread instead of attaching my message to this one

You could put a sheet of thick plastic underneath it if you wanted to. Not sure how "meshy" the floor is, but how about cable ties through that to the frame of the greenhouse?

yeah, that's what I was thinking- some kind of under something. I saw that the local gardening centre had the 2 layer greenhouses in yesterday which is about the size I'd be comfortable with out on the balcony but haven't had a chance to really look at the structure of the bottom so been wondering about the practicalities of doing something like that. Did occur to me taht getting a groundsheet from a tent or something might be a partial answer.
But wondering how easy it is to feed ties through mesh. Seems that the balcony base is made outof the same stuff as the sides & I don't have any access to the underside of the mesh. But thinking that the exotic seeds I've been looking at recently, salvaged from fruit I've been eating might need a greenhouse type environment to get going. I have a couple of pomegranate seedlings on my windowsill but have been warned taht if they don't get heat as well as light they, as well as other exotics can become too brittle to put on leaves & whatever. Also been wondering what the story is come autumn when summer warmth/light is gone, unless I do get a greenhouse or equivalent.

Sorry Stuggy, If you're looking at a two tier blowaway to raise exotic fruit then I think you're on a loser straight away. I assumed (wrongly?) that you were looking at growing tomatoes or chillies.

Whereabouts are you trying to grow stuff? If you add your location (nearest town) to your profile it will help a lot.

Galway, just been experimenting with things at the moment. May be better keeping that plant on the windowsill then anyway.

My garden is only 10ft wide too and I put a 4ft x 6ft blowaway greenhouse in it! Mine is sited lengthways which gives me just enough room to squeeze a couple of compost bins in too. I tried the tomato houses but they dont give you much space and as they are flat topped cats will always try and walk on them (and put their claws through!)...
I have 5 tomato plants, 4 cucumber, 3 basil, 1 melon and 1 pepper in there as well as storage so it turned out to be a good use of space.
