All I've done in the GH today is to take out the cucs and replace them with winter lettuce plants.

The tunnel itself was a doddle I had it made in a hour, only thing is its meant to be on grass because it has ropes and pegs like a tent, I did away with those and attached it to the slabs using plumbers pipe securing brackets. The doors however took me all day.

As for filling it, those plants were there already, I built the tunnel over them. More or less.

    • Sneaks in the back door, as she hasn't posted much owing to two allotments, a poly and a greenhouse - plus dogs, new kitchen and near divorce (just kidding) - starting to remove all spent plants from the Polytunnel and I had my best sweetcorn ever in the Polytunnel - am doing that again. Put some onion sets in (late I know) - not doing a huge amount of garlic in there, as it was pants reward for the space. Pruning vines, planting another (yes, you know I'm mad) and sticking down a thick layer of compost mulch.
      Good to be back.

Cheers both - don't be worried VC - just busy and unfortunately that equated to tardy and remiss. Hope all OK and not chatting either

              • Removed spent toms and aubergines from poly (total crop from both this year - 1 small aubergine!), started pulling up weeds that had grown all over the floor and digging over the soil... going to add lots of manure and leafmould, and build raised beds and a proper path down the middle, hopefully get something useful from this 'investment' next year!

                  • Yesterday - sowed the chilli seeds for 2014!
Today (once I've finished marking ) I hope to move more soil into the raised bed in the GH and plant out the little module lettuce & leaves plants that have been in there for ages - may not work, but hey...

                      • Elmo, strange you should mention changing the bed layout, I've sort of been doing that this morning. I had four small paths in the polytunnel that were meant to make it easier to get to plants...what they really got used for was storing all kinds of junk that I should really have put away in the shed. So...spent the day digging them out and increasing the size of four of my raised beds.

It's increased the growing area by about 4sqm and if (and it's a big if) my arithmetic is correct, that's an increase of 16% reclaimed from wasted space. Now I'm gonna relax in a nice warm bath and try and soothe my poor abused muscles.

                            • First year I've had a greenhouse too!! Got some carrots, lettuce, beetroot, sweet peas, radishes, early potatoes in pots, and just moved a few of my tomato seedlings in there which I cover with bubble wrap at night to protect. I've sowed some more too in case the others catch cold but weather has been very warm this last couple of weeks they are doing ok. Bit of a year of experimenting this year to find out what works etc etc. Apparently cucumbers are best started off late April so wont start mine yet. Ive sown some peppers though ........... all great fun!
