Update - I also have a broken pane of glass - as well as a cracked one Different sides of the GH and both at the top
I've slid a piece of perspex over the hole as a temporary fix and put masking tape over the cracked one, just to hold it together. Looks like 2 new panes of glass and a visit from a friend

Its the top pane so I would expect to have to remove the lower one as well - and I'd probably break that in the process! The GH is 30+ years old so its about time for a repair
      Thanks for the Link Ap
Top pane usually overlaps the bottom one so you should only need to change the top one. Likely to be the older imperial sizes as opposed to metric but as I said take an identical pane with you to be safe if you decide to replace

Can you wedge a length of cane across the glass as a temp measure. Would hate it to fall through on you.

Thanks Ap. I'm not sure that I want to remove a pane as a demo - I'd probably break it. I'm pretty sure its 2'x2' but I'll measure it up first.
And thanks BM! Its my fault that the glass broke today. Cutting back the grape vine and one of the tendrils had wriggled between the glass and the frame and I didn't notice. A bit of a tug, a cracking noise and me stepping back in a hurry! Luckily the glass fell outside and slid down the pane below. Its still held in place on 3 sides so I hope it will be safe.. I've attached the glass to the perspex panel above it with masking tape temporarily.

measure in metric to be sure. Wouldn't be the first person to buy glass just to find it's too small as most suppliers jsut have 600 x 600mm. Top panes on my two houses at home are 20" x 24 with 24 x 24 below.

I've got a roof vent glass pane cracked in several places across the corner - has been for years. When it happened I cursed then taped it up with some stuff I used on the last broken pane [now replaced].

Its been like it for years possibly 5. I replaced the tape with a new piece last year as it began to lift a bit but after all that time it was still working well.

Same roll of tape as well, so must be good stuff. By Unibond, it is designed as weather proof window repair tape. Its a clear greenish tape.

Mind you if I had a break right across the middle I'd change the glass.

Why not call your local glass merchant before you go there and ask does he do this sort of stuff and know what you are talking about? Ask his guidance on measuring etc. That is how I got my 25 year old glass replaced right first time. You never know they might fit if you tell them you are too tiny to fit yourself!

AND take an old sheet to wrap it in for the journey back - you won't want to break it before you get it home - so much easier to handle properly packed. Wish I'd known that before I let OH pick the new panes up and break the corner of one of them when he put them down.............

Best of luck these thing take ages don't they?
