  • Help needed - Varmint in poly tunnel decimating plants

I am after some help and advice please.

I have had some young everlasting cauliflowers in my poly tunnel all winter until last week. Then I found quite a few that had been 'snipped' off about 1cm above soil level and completely gone as well as a few that had recently been snipped and were laying on the soil. Yesterday I found a pile of fresh cauliflower leaves over the entrance hole into one of the raised beds I have. I also found a young wallflower that had suffered similar treatment.

I have had 2 different types of rat/mouse traps loaded with peanut butter in the same area for a few weeks and not caught anything. Some separate poison has been eaten but nothing taken in the last 2 weeks when cauliflower damage happened.

Any idea as to what is causing the damage and importantly how to catch it/them would be greatly appreciated as I won't be able to grow anything in the tunnel at this rate!

If you suspect mice/rats. Wash and rinse your traps well whilst wearing gloves so as to leave no human odour on them. An old game keeper I knew used to swear by using urine to kill the smell of humans.

Set your traps with different baits until you find one thats working. Pea seeds are good at this time of year for mice, chocolate works to for some reason. Chocoholics will have to excuse that.
