      • I must admit, it does not fill me with confidence. I went down on Sunday to transplant the toms (were getting too big to be at home) & the kite was rocking like Elvis. Have picked up some more timber so am going down after work to do some more bracing........if it's still there.

        • Your Poly is looking good, BM

I have just put one up on my plot which looks the same design as yours, but only 6x8 (the max we are allowed). Mine was £42 including delivery.

I was very intrigued by your solution to the wind using the bracing struts. I may have to pinch that idea if I need it.

I haven't build beds inside of mine. I am planning on using staging to hold seed trays and growbags which will hopefully allow me to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and chillis plus lots of other 'tender' plants.

I hope you will keep us advised as to how you get on.

            • Went down to the lottie after work & the kite was still standing (to my surprise). Anyway, to play safe I put some braces between the horizontal bars & the arches on both sides. Looks more like a timber yard than a growing tunnel........

              • I was thinking of saving up for a 'proper' polytunnel but the cost and the risk of having it an allotment where we have vandals causing damage every now and then is making me re-think my options... I'm seriously considering one of these instead now!

I think this will appease OH slightly as it means we may spend the difference on sorting out the some electrical and plastering work to the kitchen and living room!

I'm going to check how wide the door openings are as I'd like to get something a bit more sturdy but in there and I think it will definitely need so extra bracing so I reckon I'll be back and asking lots of pesky questions BM... just like the grow lights thread! ; )

Oh, and I love the pipe insulation to keep the cover off the frame BM... genius idea!

                  • I had a 6ft/4ft Greenhouse made of the same plastic, (Have got an aluminum greenhouse to put up now) I used the plastic one myself for 3 years and now my daughter is going to use it on her allotment, I told her OH to fasten some wood to the base with them U shaped bolts that you use for an aerial, staple the plastic to the wood then dig a trench to put the base in, if you have wide enough wood you can put some bricks either side of it for extra strength/weight then bury it, not sure if it would keep it in place on an allotment but it might be worth a try All I used at home was very heavy bricks on the plastic flaps and it stayed put through the very bad winds we had, I expected it to be gone several times lol

                    • I think I know the answer to my question but I'm going to ask it anyway!
Does the ground on which the PT is erected have to be absolutely level? If I dug a trench and found a big, immovable tree root, could I put the frame on it or would I have to build the level up to match the height of the root?

I think in that case you would need to raise the height up otherwise you will end up with an uneven polytunnel frame and also the cover would be uneven when you put it overtop.

                        • Thanks Mark. I assume that the framework has a base rail and that it would "seesaw" on uneven ground like a root. I'd really like a PT but my garden is riddled with roots and rocks Wish I could DIY something myself but I'm totally clueless
