  • Wooden growhouse or blow-away?

    Hi All

My windowsills are full to bursting and the cold frame is very very overflowing and I need more covered space for stuff - particularly given the yukky weather! Have looked in the past at getting one of those norfolk space-savers, but deciding given my rubbish DIY skills that I'd probably never manage to get the thing together, and my blow-away having since gone to blowaway heaven (urged on more quickly by our cat who thought the top of it was a fab place to sleep in the sun and so bent the uprights, tore the cover) I think it's time to invest in something new! The budget is small so I'm looking at probably £60 max and I just don't know whether to get a cheap wooden growhouse thing (Homebase have one on sale at the mo) or get another blowaway. The reason I'm a bit torn is that it does not look like you can take shelves out of the wooden growhouse so would be no good if I wanted to keep chillis/peppers in there for a bit of ezxtra summer heat, it would really be more use for bringing on seedlings and for extending the salad season. One the other hand they look nicer and might be less prone to heading down the garden in a strong wind. We can anchor the blowaway to the fence, but it gives very easy access to the cat if we do that! But...the wooden growhouses seem to get quite mixed reviews and often don't seem to be very good quality given the price.

Um..well after all that waffle I just wondered if anyone could offer an opinion on the matter? Ideally I will be saving up to get something a bit sturdier/nicer in the next couple of years anyway, so the fact that it wont last forever is less of an issue. Alternative suggestions gratefully received! Payday tomorrow so I want to make a quick decision (before I change my mind another hundred times) and relive the pressure on the overflowing windowsills.
    Thanks as always!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

Given what you've said above, I would go for a blowaway. They're only about £15 Greenfingers 3 Tier Greenhouse

I just put this up last week but it all depends on the space available.

I have both, used the four-tier blowaway last year and this year "upgraded" to a wooden growhouse (not from homebase but I think pretty much identical).

When I first built the wooden one and put it outside, it blew over three times in a week. It has baseplates that can be screwed down onto something to secure it, but what I've done is attach a strip of wood along the top of the baseplates and laid for now a bag of compost over that - its so secure even I can't move it now let alone the wind!

The wooden growhouse isn't perfect, panels and doors don't align exactly etc, but I think if you're prepared to do a bit of DIY for me its the better option. Bit of insulation tape around the doors, I've also attached an automatic vent opener to the lid.

The shelves do come out, but they're a snug fit and I think you would have to detach the lid to get them out. However, I reckon if you sawed the shelves in half you could probably get them in and out the front pretty easily?

Hopefully (on phone so fingers crossed) I've attached a photo showing auto vent opener and I think you can see some insulation tape between the doors too.

Thanks for all the comments. I think I may have convinced myself that the blow-away is the way to go until I can save up some cash for something rather more sturdy that doesn't not require permanently attaching to the patio to stop to blowing off down the garden! Bigmally - the polytunnel looks great value for that price but unfortunately wont fit in our garden. Would love something that big though!!
Kinkdom - I am really loving the auto vent opener idea and think I will try that when I do get something a bit better (I was thinking a more expensive, maybe a big bigger wood growhouse of the sort that wont fall apart in a couple of years). Was it difficult to fit? (my DIY skills being pretty basic!!)
            Thanks

I have the homebase one I think your talking about and for £60 it's not bad but it doesn't all line up correctly and the biggest issue for cat owners is when a cat jumps on the lid (which they will do) the plastic collapses inwards. Will be buying a solid piece of clear plastic to attach to the lid at some point so it's an extra cost needed.

And on the homebase ones at least no the shelves do not come out.

                hi Sammy
Thanks for that info! Will definitely give that one a miss. I don't really want to pay out £60 for something the cats will destroy in a few days - and yes I can guarantee they will try to sit on it and sun themselves. The blow-away it is then!

I've got a little blow away that's only just starting to get tatty after 4 years, not bad for £20. Don't have anything strong to tie it to so to stop it actually taking off down the garden I keep a few 10l tubs in the bottom full of compost that stays warm for potting stuff on etc.

What about putting some rope over the top fastened to a couple of 4litre milk containers filled with water.............failing that, bricks.........
