  • North facing wall space

Hi folks, On my plot my shed is 10 x 10 and 2 walls of it are overlooking other plots the third has the doubl doors in it and the fourth is North facing.
My question is I have tried to grow things in the bed at the bottom of this wall with very little luck .....
If I was to build a lean-to against this wall about 15 inches deep with shelves would I be able to grow my seeds in it ... It will be in the shade except on the nicest of days in mid summer but if the temperature is there would it cause problems not having real sunshine
    All digestions greatly appreciated
    Cheers
    Cheers .... John

Seedlings need light otherwise they tend to get leggy. In my front garden i have a wall like this and i use it to grow my mint against (mint will grow anywhere) as i have really struggled to get things to grow there.

I have a small north facing wall. I planted a morello cherry which fruits well despite getting no direct sunlight at all. It was only a cheap Lidl one too!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

I grow calabrese Green Magic against a north facing fence panel with no problem. In fact it works for me as my other calabrese is ready first and the north facing stuff extends the season.

Like the idea of the calabrese will try that this year and I may even have a look in lidl for a cherry, if i train it fan style I may even get both to grow

Warm shade is still shade, and most plants need lots of light.

You can grow leafy stuff in slight shade: I have a comfrey bed in my shadier areas

So very true, but not necessarily direct sunlight, in fact I find lettuce for instance does better out of direct sunlight.

Hoping the Reine de Glace lettuce seeds bought from Real Seeds will like my north-facing wall. It gets about an hour of sun in the evening. Lungwort and bulbs are happy there in spring, nasturtiums go wild in the summer and herbs of all kinds do very well all year round. Violets have recently taken over the ground between the pots and are making a lovely trail and Welsh poppies and orchids pop up all over the place. I found some double-flowered harebells in a hydrangea pot last year - so pretty! Hope it has survived the winter.
