  • DIY coldframe

I never did get around to making a cold frame so instead I came up with this idea.

Its an old tin bath plus a piece of corrugated PVC roofing that had been damaged by next doors builders.

Hardest bit was figuring out how to vent the lid without it blowing away, so I used string, tent pegs and a couple of canes.

I'll post a picture of what Nic made me.
He cut some of the polycarbonate in half and made a box of scaff. boards. Used hooks as hinges and done!

              Great idea.

I made a cold frame a few years ago - but haven't used it yet...

I knocked a cold frame together yesterday from some leftover concrete blocks and a piece of glazing we found when we too the plot on 7 years ago (I think it's the lid from a chest freezer). I was hoping to go 2 courses high but I only had 12 blocks. I'm hoping a single course will be ok to harden off squash & winter veg, if not I'll maybe lay a course of bricks round the top as I have plenty of them spare.

I've left the cover off so the pea shingle can dry off a bit. Will replace it tonight before it rains again.

That brings back some memories, for the first 15 years of my life I used one of those for real.

Twas nice in a winter in front of a big coal fire.

My previous plotholder left behind a couple of sealed double glazing units. I reckon they'll make a nice snug frame I introduce them to some old decking boards.

I am using an upside-down fish tank someone left at the "help yourself" corner. I suppose it will get a bit hot when the sun comes out though, as there's no ventilation. Would propping it up on a couple of planks of wood help or would that make it too chilly at night? (I am a coldframe novice!)
