  • Safest Polytunnel for Allotment (so it won't blow away)

    Hi guys

I have decided that I definitly want a polytunnel on my soil.

Been looking around and with my budget (about £100) it looks like I can only get the blow-away green cover sorts.

From what I have read everyone seems to find these miles away from their plots after the slightest breeze

Is there a full proof way of anchoring these on soil?

If I was to increase my budget to about £200 would you say there is much of a jump in quality?

Any structure will need anchoring, especially if you live in a windy area. Polytunnels, greenhouses and cloches all turn into kites unless anchored.

But if I was to buy something like this 4.5m x 2m PolyTunnel Greenhouse Pollytunnel Grow Garden House Green Houses New | eBay

What would be the best way to anchor on soil?

Okay, so it looks I will need to give it some good support with my own timber.

Might get some fence posts and attach the frame some timber in the posts

I got a smaller version of BM's tunnel and secured it by banging broom handles about 2 foot into the ground next to each upright and then duck taping them securely to each upright.

It has withstood gusts up to 65 mph in our area last night, so seems to be reasonably secure.

I;m nore concerend about the covering getting ripped off as at present it is only secured by a little tie string on each upright and having one side placed under my decking frame.

I think I may add strengthening battens and fasten the cover to them over this weekend, just to make sure.

Bury the polytunnel base about 1ft underground on all sides, then attach the ends of the cover to some heavy wood at the bottom of the trench and stick some heavy stone in the holes too....Then dig out a path down the middle about 1ft deep so you still have the right height inside....
Also bury the flaps from the cover on the inside of the tunnel...

That's my plan for next week anyway.

I have one of the galvanised 2m x 3m green mesh covered 25mm poly tunnels I brought off ebay and they have a pretty sturdy frame and have dug trenches round and put the cover in the ground about 1ft deep all round the sides. Seems to have stayed on for two winters. needs replacing now thought as holes have appeared from the windows falling out of the mesh so if you do buy one get a clear cover to put on is my suggestion that's what I plan to do this year and make a door too
