Our new greenhouse

Tomorrow morning we take delivery of our new greenhouse, a Simplicity Classic package from The Greenhouse People.



Because of an arthritis problem I have elected to have it erected by one of their recommended fitters, which will happen on Monday 9th.

We are so looking forward to doing some greenhousing (IS that a word?) but I need to make some staging first. We are also getting a potting shed



and having that erected too - this gardening is nearly as expensive a golf

So - some questions

1. What can I start growing straight away?
2. We have some hanging baskets with Pelargoniums in them, can we take cuttings/overwinter the original plants?
3. Can we grow some winter salad stuff? If so, what?

You did the right thing. I thought I'd be able to do my own, but the glass was so heavy I couldn't even lift it. The fitter was brilliant, very quick and professional, top bloke.

I've just sown land cress & winter gem in my gh. Onions soon, then garlic

Pelargoniums ...can we take cuttings/overwinter the original plants?

The old plants tend to get a bit scrappy and woody, so cuttings are probably the best idea. Now is the ideal time to take them: no bag, they don't need the additional moisture of a cloche

My wife bought me a green house for my 65th. She couldnt afford a top of the range one so it was a kit. polcarb, galvanised steel frame. Now i used to be an agricultural engineer so I thought it would be a doddle to erect this. it was not. Dozens of pieces of angle iron and each one had to be facing the right way, the instuctions (badly translated) were pretty useless which meant a lot of undoing and back tracking etc. I think you were wise to have it erected unless you have a degree in mechanical engineering. having said that if I could do it again it would be a lot easier. It has transformed my gardening, particularly tomatoes and cucumbers, starting seeds and cuttings etc.
I have started some lettuce to provide us with winter salad, will be housing some late potatoes when there is room, and have all manner of cuttings. My tender fuschias will be in here come the frosts. Because I did not get this until May i was late with tomatoes etc and now have problems ripening them but next year i will be off to a flying start, good luck with yours.

As you can see its on a steep incline which is both a plus and a minus, its a bit like an amphitheatre and people lean over our back wall looking down at me, i feel like a polar bear in a zoo. (Never had a bun thrown to me though) The plus is that i have made a series of terraced beds and can stand on one and weed the next one up without bending.

I couldn't resist starting some broad beans! (the Sutton) Don't tell me, I know it's a bit early, but I just want to see something growing, and maybe I can keep them going in the, mostly empty, greenhouse until it's time to pop them out in a tub in the Spring

Thanks VC - the Toms were growing in the little placcy greenhouse but weren't ripening, so we carried them into our new toy and lo and behold, we have had loads of delicious toms for salads over the last week or so.

The visit to Harrogate Flower Show over the weekend really fired our enthusiasm too. Not just some of the most stunning flowers, but absolutely HUGE veggies, onions, carrots, cabbages and the rest. That is where we picked up the aluminium staging (I WAS going to make our own, but the price of the ally stuff was so cheap I couldn't resist ) - completely forgetting that we had gone down in the sports car

With a bit of fiddling I managed to get it in, but had to lay our suitcase open on the top of it

Next time we will go in the everyday car
