To compliment the "View From A Greenhouse Door" I thought I would start one from the Brassicage Door, especially as crops are starting to come into fruition.

Is that debris netting Bigmally?

Yes, It's 22ft long, 8ft wide, 8ft high covered in 3mt wide debris netting.

Mine is a tad smaller at 1.6m x 1m x 1m and doesn't have a door.

Yes, I'm pleased with them so far. Last year the carrots got carrot fly so I'm hoping this will solve that particular problem. Incidentally, that's an east facing wall and a couple of metres away on the left is an equally high north facing wall. Just shows that veg can be grown in quite deep shade.

Thats only a quarter of what I'm building It's half of one cage and there will be two cages.

I'm hoping it will be light enough to lift off, weed, etc. and then put back. It will be a 2 person job for certain, judging by the weight of what I test assembled today (as in the picture) it should be do-able . . . only one way to find out, live and learn

Why not just lift it and prop it up with some timber so you can reach under it, keep props at both sides of the cage.

Might end up doing that, wouldn't work currently as it's designed to be "inserted" into the soil by about 6" for added stability in high winds, the weight might make that feature unnecessary though

No problem, let the legs still go into the soil. You can still prop it up.

A long as it was a thick gauge of plastic . . . yes that would work

We assembled the complete cage at the Allotment today . . . wasn't too heavy to carry and lift which was one of my fears. I'm going to do some small strengthening modifications for the 2nd one, I'm a little concerned about the bow in the middle when we lift it.

It's a prototype though so some improvements are to be expected with time

Mine is the blue waterpipes-netting construction. I 'sewed ' the ends and gathered the netting with garden string, then pegged the loop down into the soil. There is more string attached at intervals down each side halfway up the netting so that it can be rolled up and secured at any time, easy access for weeding, harvesting etc. and to let more sunlight in.
The shade will hopefully protect from birds/ wind/ frost/ and sun scorch, as well as providing shade to prevent bolting, and insects like cabbage white and carrot fly.
The mesh is a crinkly kind taken from another cloche system, most things would have to be pretty determined to get through.
Brassicas go down the centre (height), down the sides I have carrots, spinach, lettuce, easily picked /thinned by rolling up the sides, which are pinned down with pegs afterwards.
I could replace the netting with clear plastic at some future date to make a regular polytunnel.
Am very pleased with it, not to mention myself!
