electric propagator

Evening all

Just wanted to get your opinions on electric propagators, and how you use them.
I am thinking of getting a windowsill one but am not sure if its just adding extra faff. Do I just germinate the seeds and put them in my cold frame?

Yes, I use my prop for starting off toms and chillies/peppers mostly or anything that needs a little heat. They all germinate closer together, rather than a staggered start. As soon as they sprout they get taken out and left indoors until they are big enough to withstand the cooler temps, outside or in the GH

Some seeds do germinate better with underheating but the seed doesn't need sunlight until it pokes its head above the compost and in the past I've put a plant pot covered loosely with a small bag (freezer/sandwich bag etc) on top of my boiler and then when the seed has germinated put it on the windowsill in an unheated propagator or just on the windowsill covered with a bag or a cloche made from a plastic drinks bottle. That's fine for a couple of plant pots so I suppose it depends on what sort of scale you're planning for.

I tend to start mine off in the airing cupboard, then transfer to heated propagator after the seedlings start pokining their head out.
