  • seeds starting off in green house.

    Hi,

would that be okay if I leave onion seed trays in an unheated green house?

    Hi Elfeda,

If you take a look in the thread about what folk are sowing over christmas you'll find some discussion about sowing and raising onions in winter. I believe the general opinion is they need warmth to germinate but then can go in an unheated greenhouse (assuming you are in a temperate climate country).

Nice to meet you by the way!

Onion seeds need a temperature of about 13c, can this be achieved at this time of year in your greenhouse?, probably not. I have just sown mine and they are on a windowsill at home, they will be potted up at home and then after a couple of weeks taken up to the tunnel.

      Good luck Alan

Alfeda I ask again where do you live, this is important for us to be able to give correct advise.

(She said so in a different thread that I've only just read)

And I've always had London displayed as my location, honest!

Potstubsdustbins, I live in lovely cammbridge, tried to reply in the same thread , it did not through.

I also tried to update my profile with location but haven't found an option to update profile with location. am I missing anything?

onion seeds just arrived, have also ordered for heated propagator. just wary about using propagator as I wanted to use it for my tomatos and chilli etc.

can any of you suggest If I can use the propagator for onion first and would be able to move them to modules before I start for the tomatoes and chilli in 2nd week of feb. I tried to search for window sill options as well.

Hello Elfeda and welcome. I only use a heated propagator to germinate seeds. Once they're through, they come off heat and into the light. Seeds don't need light to germinate so you could also start them in the airing cupboard (if you have one) or somewhere warm indoors.

To add your location click on "My profile" then choose the "About Me" tab and add it there. There is a pencil icon to edit the location.
I'm surprised it isn't a compulsory field to complete when joining as it is so important a people rarely do add it.
