  • greenhouse damage!

ok, I have just got home to discover that one of the panes in my 8 x 6 polycarb greenhouse has been damaged by the wind.

Perhaps not surprising really with the current weather.

Basically the clips and silicone have done their job perfectly. The actual pane has become brittle, and has simply snapped under the wind pressure.

Question is, could I replace this 2ft x 4ft roof panel with GLASS?

My mate is a glazier, so I can get some safety/tempered glass quite easily...

Any thoughts? Or has anybody ever done this?

Plenty seem to have replaced glass with polycarb, but not the other way around?????

    Any advice appreciated...

Please bear in mind that I'm totally rubbish at DIY...but toughened glass is really heavy. Will the frame be strong enough to hold the glass?

I would be more inclined to fit two 2' pieces of horticulture glass and Z and W glazing clips. I also agree with Scarlet.

        Sorry, I meant LAMINATED glass!

Upon closer inspection I have at least 3 damaged roof panes!!!!!!

All just brittle and have snapped.

Maybe I will just get one pane to test?

Horticultural glass is quite thin and weak, and will smash upon impact.

I have to be careful as I have my 4 year old running around!

Talk to your local glass merchant. I am biased though as I have 2 g/houses totally done out in glass.

I have had a brief chat with my glazier mate. He will get me a single pane to try out.

He seems to think it will be absolutely fine....

            We will see!!!

Yep I will. She is quite destructive, so 'normal' glass wont last 5 minutes!

Just need a load of clear silicone, and should be good to go....

I will then clip it in with w clips, and silicone over the clips....

Damn wind is here for at least another 12 hours!!! I just hope the side panels dont get damaged as well!

I used to hold mine in with horizontal canes cut a couple of mm wider than the glazing bars & wedged in. One at the top, middle & bottom. Worked a treat..

Certainly windy here, CG. Think I've lost a fascia board on the front of the house - not even going to think about the garden

It is a nightmare VC. I suspect there will be a huge 'repairing' session going on for everyone in the morning.

My neighbour has already lost a roof tile...

Mal - Assumingly you placed the horizontal canes on the inside of the g/h? As the problem with my polycarb one, is that the clips on the outside are rock solid, especially as I siliconed them in.

But the sheer pressure of the wind just pushes and pushes the polycarb panels INTO the g/h. And by nature they become brittle over time, so subsequently just snap!

I knew this would happen eventually, so I am not 'too' P'd off about it!

And tomorrow I am manuring the plot in this weather! Only chance I have to do it....

I'd not thought about putting them on the inside. I put them on the outside to stop the panels blowing out. I have marked in red where I put them, you can see for whatever reason, I had already put some on the door panels.

I've just been out to discover the poly double pane has snapped (although gone back in ok) and 2 panes have blown out and smashed.

Boo hiss! They're angled ones too so are going to be a pain to cut.

Well it turns out that laminated glass is not cheap.

                            £20 for a 4 x 2 ft 6mm pane.

Far more pricey than bog standard greenhouse glass....

But at least it will be safe. Pics to follow....

Is laminated glass the same as toughened?
Will 6mm glass fit - I thought GH glass was 4mm?
