  • If your life depended on it, which Tomato variety would you grow?

Which variety of tomato would you grow in your polytunnel if your life depended on it bearing fruit?

or put less dramatically, which is the most reliable tomato to grow in a polytunnel?

    Regards, Dave

Well, it depends on whether you want a cherry, medium, or large type, red, yellow, orange black or blue, vine or bush. Do you want it for cooking,or eating fresh Tell us more!

I couldn't possibly just grow one! Have a look at what we've liked this year, it may help.

I love all tomatoes but my favourites are cherries, just picking and eating these fresh off the vine is awesome.
I have however been growing these in baskets and although i may still grow a few this way, i shall be growing "sweet million " again after a few years without, just lush.

Hello Scarlet, I'd like to utilize the space so I think vine, I would like to eat them fresh,
        I am happy with red,

Also, would you grow them in the ground, pots or grow bags for best results?

        Thanks, Dave

Thanks Jack, I think I will grow a cherry(vined), probably in a pallet collar(raised bed)

Thanks Nicos, I very much like the sound of Sungold, do you grow them in pots, growbags or raised beds?

I don't grow toms anymore because we always get blight here- and I don't have a greenhouse any more.

I used to grow them in a greenhouse in the ground- but replaced the soil in the borders every year with grow bags.

Don't think we ever had blight in there.

Thanks Nicos, I think I'll use raised beds and change the soil every year as you've suggested,

It would have to be a large cherry type for me, that i can just stuff in my mouth whilst walking around the plot.
Red alert worked the best for me this year along with red pear.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

If i really could only grow one, i would grow Tumbler in baskets. The yield per footprint is phenomenal, they start early and go all summer, and they taste great too. If I was allowed a couple of vines too, I would grow Sungold. In fact, that is probably what I'm going to do next year - two baskets of Tumbler, two vines of Sungold. That'll leave me more room for sweetcorn!

If it was only one tomato mine would be black cherry, which are fantastic eaten fresh of the vine. It has a bit more of a bite than red toms, tall vine plant that has a great crop. A little bigger than your average cherry so it can be sliced for a sandwich as well as eating whole, halved or quartered. Lovely roasted or pan fried too.

You do realise that everyone of us will have a favourite and that you will eventually end up growing more than one variety.

I grow those for the kids, I find them too sweet with an almost "artificial" flavour BUT it's november, (it's been unusually warm!) and ive got 3 tomatoes still producing in the GH, two of those are Sungold.

Black cherry are also my favourite tom, I've cut down on other varieties to make space for them.
