Hi Stuart and welcome to the mad house.

First if I may suggest could you add your location to your profile it will help give more targeted advice.

Folks tend to make to much of container growing where as in reality it is very simple. Right size container, decent compost, water and feed as required.

All containers should have good drainage, but there are times (mid summer) as an example when it makes life easier to have the container stood in a tray especially if it is a big thirsty plant say a tomato.

An other time would be when starting seeds of in small containers, they are usually better watered from below using the weight of the pot as a guide as to when to water.

Thanks for your info but unfortunately I cannot edit my profile for some reason. :-(

I am in Oldbury in the West Midlands with a West facing totally enclosed and sheltered but sunny patio garden.

Once you've posted a few more times, you'll be able to edit your profile. Some people can do it straight away, others can't. Its the "system" - nothing personal

May i suggest a Curry plant, although inedible, smells absolutely gorgeous. Plus it keeps cats at bay, unless you have cats.

Lemon balm is a very enthusiastic plant so best in a pot if you want to keep it under control. I believe you can make tea from the leaves.

thank you all for your advice. I am about to buy a wrought iron planter into which I can put lots of plants so that each plant can get the type of soil it prefers.
I will keep you all updated as to how they do and will hopefully be able to share some pictures of our herb 'plot'.
