Parasene Super Warm 4 problems

Hi All,

My FIL gave me his old Parasene Super Warm 4 greenhouse heater last summer, and this morning I had a go at firing it up for the first time, just an experiment really, in preparation for putting some tomato seedlings in there overnight some time soon.

It seemed really fiddly - if the wick was too high, it flamed and smoked, if it was too low it would just go out after 10-15 minutes?

Has anyone got one of these heaters? Any tips? Could it be that the wicks need changing? The heater's been sat for six months with fuel in it, and the wicks are the ones that were in it when my FIL gave it to me...

Any thoughts appreciated!

First thing I would do is dump the fuel and replace with new.

Then obtain a wick trimming tool and trim the wicks correctly.

Make sure all air supply holes are clear and properly clean.

When you light the heater you are supposed to allow 30 minutes for it to warm up and then adjust the flame to its correct height.

Same as what he said had a similar problem with my heater, had to clean the air supply holes as spiders had been busy in mine and clogged them all up. After a good clean and wick trim mine have been faultless again.

How much air flow do you have have in the greenhouse to ensure it doesn't build up too much carbon dioxide and monoxide that ends up extinguishing it and how do you achieve it? Leave the door open a crack?

I've got a side window half way up the greenhouse, I just open that a notch. Managed to get it to burn for a few hours last night, but the flame was quite high. I turned it down a little to see if it would make it through the night, but it didn't. The inside of the chimney and radiator thingy are now black with soot, so it must have been smoking a bit.

I'll do as suggested and replace the fuel, trim the wick. There's nothing blocking the airflow from underneath.
