  • greenhouse this winter

    evening folks-
i have only recently got a small greenhouse and i enjoy it that much that the moossus has trouble getting me in. i currently have the usual suspects in there, [toms, cucs etc] but what should i putting in there for the colder months ahead. are there any crops i should be sowing now in the greenhouse which are planted out autumn/winter? also which crops are good to grow and keep in the greenhouse throughout the colder months?? all ideas appreciated but i would particularly like to grow those items which are so costly to buy in supermarkets. thanks in advance..

Late flowering chrysanthemums are great to bring into the greenhouse after the toms are finished.
Keep them in large pots with three canes around them, outside, during the summer and bring them in to flower from October to Christmas. Too late for this year methinks but worth thinking about for next!

Chistmas spuds in pots would do well in the greenhouse also. Even better if you could keep it frost free!

I'd agree with Snadger but then I grow about 100 chrysanths There is a couple of ways you can tackle it. either take (aquire) cuttings at the beginng of the year grow them on in pots stood outside with either 1 or 2 stops andthen house them when they start to show colour from the buds or if your not fussed about showing take some cuttings around now ( varieties like Cassandra or the differnet sports) and grow them in a 7" pot with no stops and they'll flower sometime around November/December depending onthe weather, light etc

Have a look on here for some info http://warkcom.net/live/cme2456.htm

Congratulations on getting your greenhouse now all you need is a bigger one cos you'll soo fill that!!

Glad you are enjoying your greenhouse Middle Aged Beginner - I am having fun with mine too.

Nick, I still have a couple of dahlia tubers which haven't been put in the ground (they have little sprouts on). If I put these in 10 litre buckets, could they be taken into the greenhouse later in the year to flower for Christmas too? Re showing flowers, we had a friend years ago who was a top Dahlia man - he had cups and ribbons etc from all over the place and pictures of flowers as big as my head!

Hi Shirlthegirl, I can never keep Dahlias in flower beyond November as there just isn't enough light for them.
A woman I met in Madeira told me she had tried to get Dahlias to flower in the winter there as the climate is so mild (21 degrees) but she couldn't make them do it. They would only flower at their allotted time. But you might still want to try.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Thanks Alice. Might as you say give them a try anyway as the worst that will happen is that they don't grow!! They aren't going to do much sitting in the package anyway are they
