I use thick and strong bamboo canes cut down and pushed in nice and deep with black conduit piping over the top for the arch. I really don't like the look of the blue piping.

Check out 'Road pins' : about 8mm sreel with with hook at the top, which nicely take bamboo or pipe cross pieces.
Cheap and long lasting.I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."
