  • 2017 Undercover Calendar.

    Continuing BM's http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...dar_87865.html thread.

I know we already have View from the greenhouse door but maybe thought it would be a good idea to run a calendar for those who grow under cover whether it be a Greenhouse, Polytunnel, Walk-in-Cage, or fruit cages.
    Location....East Midlands.

I thought I would have a go at this, although I may find some things are impossible to photograph when the nets go on! The area is small and it is difficult to stand back far enough to get everything into the photo.

      The growhouse:

Strawberry Marshmello in need of a trim and some young osteospermum plants which will go in the front garden when the wallflowers have finished.

      The carrot cage:

Currently minus its veggiemesh net as I don't want the whole thing collapsing if it snows. 3 brokali plants at the back, 3 tubs of carrots and one of swede (which are very small). I may extend the cage slightly to the left if I can find enough posts of the correct lengths, as I think the net is big enough.

      The fruit cage:

Also without its net at the moment. 2 blueberry bushes - Bluecrop (left) and Dixie. Carrots in the tub on the floor and mibuna on the shelf. The wild strawberries (and strawberry Malwina out of picture) on the shelves on the right may also be netted later.

      The downstairs grow light garden:

Mostly lettuces of varying sizes, plus some choy sum and Provencale salad seedlings.

      The upstairs grow light garden:

Currently a dumping ground for lettuces that have been cut and are trying to regrow, plus some pea shoots and a pot of basil which is starting to germinate. The big lettuce is actually the remains of the original sowing and contains about 4 plants which I have not yet got round to eating!

A few undercover areas with dogs!

The raspberry cage with JoanJ (autumn) on the right and Glen Ample (summer) and a few different dual cropping ones on the left (can't remember their names but one's purple)

Last year's brassica cage. Not sure what will be in there this year but there are 2 grapevines on the right and Elsanta strawberries in pots at the base. At the far end is a 9 star perennial cauliflower and the remains of the sprouts on the left.

The seedling GH - starting to fill up.

Pots of carrots, beetroot, mooli, turnip, with radish, lettuce and spring onions in the bed. On the left, seedling peas, beans and goodness knows what and a lot of leeks and physalis at the far end.
Most of these were sown during my Roots, Shoots, Fruits and Leaves era

Part of another GH with a pot of mangetout, lots of bunching onions, lemon grass and some perennial roots in trays on the table.

There are 2 more GHs - one has overwintering geraniums and begonias, the other is full of pots and seed trays and is for working in. Maybe next month it can go public!

Here's my tunnel in January 'warts n' all'... on the left there are some overwintering Spring greens and a few Spring onions. On the right, a pile of rubbish, and some chard and raab seeds drying out (hung from roof). Also, some broad beans right at the back on the right, about 6" tall.

Back left are 2 rows of spring cabbages Duchy planted in October 16.

Front left are 3 rows of first earlies- Epicure, Casablanca and Rocket that went in on the 9th January under shredded paper and grass clippings.

Back right under the cloche are a couple of rows of broad beans sown direct on 20th November 16.
Although you cant see them in front of that is a row of spring onions White Lisbon Winter, sown the same day.

Front right greenish patch is land cress coming through behind which are a couple or three rows of pea Douce Provence, again sown 20th November 16.

The strawberries have been moved closer together to allow for a bucket of lst year's calabrese, which is still slowly producing shoots.

One of the pots of brokali has been moved into the slightly sunnier area near the fence, otherwise much the same as last month. The carrots are looking a bit scratty, but there are some nice big ones, particularly in the square pot on the left (Nantes Frubund). I've extended the cage slightly to the left.

Nothing has changed here except that I've finished eating the carrots from the pot under the shelf.

Lettuces and microgreens (cress, provencale salad and choy sum), a 6-pack of turnips which will be going to my friend's greenhouse tomorrow as they are getting leggy, and some yellow beetroot in the green cells which I'm hoping to squeeze a very early crop from.

Pea shoots and carrots at the back. Lettuces, most of which are regrowing after being cut, microgreens (basil, amaranth) and 2 Shirley tomatoes in the black pots in the middle, which are not that easy to see but are growing nicely.
