  • Greenhouse Heaters

    Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of greenhouse heaters.

I did check with the company before I bought these two that the heater was suitable for the lean too greenhouse

    Forest Garden Mini Greenhouse

Bio Green Warmax Mini Paraffin Heater

I've used the heater one night successfully, we checked through the evening and then in the morning when I open the lid. Still lit. Obviously, turned out during the day.
It works by a wick in paraffin which is held in the base.

The next night I unscrew the top half, without disturbing the wick. Light and re attach the lid. Checked after about an hour and there appears to be burning around the top as if paraffin had been poured and was burning. I know that it hadn't. OH asked me if I'd refilled it and I explained that I had not.

    Any ideas?

I have tried two paraffin heaters and neither were a great success. Now I have a bottled gas heater which is a great success. It was more expensive than the paraffin heater but it keeps the greenhouse frost free on the lowest setting.

Have a look at parabolic heaters they work out cheaper than parafin and are a lot warmer.

I used a couple of those several years quite successfully in to small lean too's I built, they should be topped up on a daily basis and then the flame checked after burning for an hour to see if it needs turning down. The paraffin can warm up during operation and increase the size of the flame.

Some people have success with a pile of manure rotting to create heat. Free and you end up with compost. Hotel spot right atop the heap, which should be 3ft Sq to generate heat. Lasts about 10+ weeks then renew.

Thank you for the suggestions I will have a look at the links.

I must say, the seedlings in there do not seem to be bothered by the winter so far

I've got a few electric tube heaters I bought on the web for my wooden/polycarbonate mini growhouse and my blowaway. The wooden growhouse is well insulated and sealed, and a 90W heater can raise the temperature inside by 11 Celsius. It's only about 1.5 metres high by about 70cm wide and 60cm deep though. For reference if it's running for say 12 hours a day on full pelt it will cost about £4 a month in electricity (flat rate not economy 7 rates).
