Quick Question About Led Grow Lights...pls Help!

Hi all,

So I bought the Mars Hydro 300 LED grow light.

The question is related to the set up: Does the light have to be hanged (set up 2 pic) or can I place it on top of two timber battens ensuring that the line of light is not obstructed (set up 1)?

The only concern I have is by placing it on top of two battens, do I risk overheating the lights?

Not an expert on these so with that proviso I'd say they'd be fine touching the battens.

If I was doing it I'd set up a couple roughly as a test rig then switch it in in a room where I was going to be for a few hours watching TV or whatever, to see how hot they got. If you try this, don't forget to switch off if you leave the room.

I'd attach the light to chains so you can raise the light as the plants grow, LED lights only needs to be a matter of inches away from the plant as they do not get hot.

Agree with Mally..better to have them hanging on a pulley type device to raise and lower the height

I found the light doesn't get warm on the condition that the fan and vents are left unobstructed.

However, adjusting the height of the LED is a problem. Bigmallly: How did you overcome this problem with your set up?

Also even though LEDs give out very less heat, the spec details different heights for the different stages of growth (e.g. 18 inches for veggie stage, 12 inches for flowering). I think the theory is plants grow up to the light. If left too close, they stop growing up and start concentrating on flowering. (Let me know if I've gone bonkers)

looking at the fitting there looks to be "eyes" that chains could be attached to.

I used cup hooks above light fittings to raise and lower

The lights could be at a fixed height but the seedlings below are raised to the appropriate height. That way you can cater for plants of all sizes whereas, lowering the light means its a standard distance away from all the plants.

PS It would be better is you didn't use the Ca*****s word on here as it attracts the spammers. Perhaps you could edit it before the Mods spot it.

I liberated from the wife one of those free standing clothes racks , hang the light from the cross rail which adjusts up and down easily
