This year's punt - pineapple

So I bought a pineapple from Lidl the other day with nice fresh looking green leaves and I thought...I wonder.....!

So I did a bit of googling and found some instructions about how to do it. I also found a story on the Mirror website about a gran from Cornwall who planted a pineapple top to try and make an interesting pot plant and it produced a flower then a fruit, although it did take 6 years.

Relatively easy to grow - twist off the leaves, then trim back the fruity bits/take off bottom leaves until you see little brown dots/roots on base. Put on a saucer with a bit of water in until roots grow, then plant.
I had mine for two years, kept inside all winter and outside in the summer, but after 2 years we had glorious weather, I put it outside and then a surprise overnight frost (in the end of may) killed it.
Frustrating.
But if I can get one to grow it can't be too hard, just don't let it get cold.

If you really get into it you might want to have a read up of some of the old gardening literature from 200+ years ago. Growing "pines" which could be served to your astonished guests was one of the skills prized by the head gardeners of the very rich. It was only Dukes and similar who could afford to do this sort of thing, special "pine houses" were built to grow them with rotting stable manure providing the heat and extremely expensive glass sheeting on top - like an enormous hotbed. :-)

Years ago before the RHS decimated the London shows, there was someone who regularly exhibited fruiting pineapples grown from fruit heads. They had names like "Safeway 1995".

They had them at Wisley last year - both in the hothouse where they usually have them, and also outside (transplanted) in the new Mediterranean garden. They looked spectacular.
