I have an 10x6 greenhouse - elite craftsman. It is at the bottom of the garden in a sheltered spot. From late morning to evening it gets sun and it gets so hot. I spent all day at work worrying about my plants and cane home about 5.30 to find it at 42c / 107f. I have two window vents - one automatic. Plus Louvre vents at the side. I had left it all open when I left for work and soaked the floor and left the door open. I wasn’t keen to paint the greenhouse but is that the only option to cool it a bit ?

You can get netting like the stuff they use for safety round scaffolding - if you draped some of that over the outside it would provide partial shade. -
I inherited a greenhouse with shade netting inside - I *think* some people have successfully used old net curtain or similar to provide a bit of shade - you use plastic clips to hang it inside...sigpic

We put this up a few days ago..... we have a 20x10 foot and it gets the sun all morning, afternoon and evening!
This was about 10 pound from amazon and we just did the left hand die roof and walls... so just about 10x10. This has made quite a substantial difference... we open the door and 4 vents around 8am and with this shading we are able to keep it around 80-85.Comment

That looks like exactly what I need. So you think I am best shading it all? I am growing tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, basil, gherkins and chillis. There are also a few things that I am starting in there but will move out like little gem, coriander and beetroot.Comment

With us we get no shade at all. We decided to hang them here as where the sun rises and moves over (right over that area and quite close) whereas down at the other end the sun is further away and not as hot ( setting sun) it works for us.Comment

I deliberately placed my greenhouse where it is some dappled shade from around 1 to 3 pm, just so it doesn't over heat. Max temp in it last year was 30 degrees, it's the minimum I have trouble with, last night it went down to 10 degrees, that's the first time for weeks we've not had 5 degrees in there over night.Comment

a longer term plan, but could you grow some shade?
I have a grapevine (came with the greenhouse with the house) that is trained along the inside of the top of the wall and grows up the sunny roof side. It stops the greenhouse getting too hot. Grows like an absolute weed, mind. (and the grapes are lovely, but little things with two pips in each so fiddly to eat)Comment

If you want the grapes to be bigger your best bet is to thin them. First take off a few whole bunches to thin those out , then using a small pair of scissors (like nail scissors) cut out individual grapes when they reach pea size from each bunch - mega-fiddley of course, so I rarely bother, but you can see the difference if you do do it.Originally posted by bikermike View PostComment

By 11:30 its in the shad of the tree and then at around 3:30 the sun starts shining from the end of the garden onto the greenhouse until it goes down.
The sun went in yesterday when I took the photos so didn't get the whole day.Comment
