I have been keeping an eye on my beetroot and carrots, both have fantastic foliage, but the roots are still very disappointing and small, it looks like it will be the end of september before I will get anything worthwhile from them, they do look so very healthy though, the heatwave was not the cause as they had plenty of water and we were not as warm as further south or for as long, we now have strong winds and the tail end of a tropical storm due to hit us tomorrow, don't you just love our summers...

Similar with my early plantings, I sowed a load more nearly 3 weeks ago, will wait and see.

One lot of carrots bolted - probably too hot/dry, but it was a variety (Samurai) that I have not grown before. The rest (mostly nantes frubund) are doing ok and I am eating the Nandor (fly resistant so no nets needed) at just more than finger thick at the moment.

Beetroot at the plot is growing fine - I have too many and they are getting too big for 1 meal before I can eat them. Sorry

For me, 2 sowings of carrots have failed to germinate. 3rd sowing only went in a week ago, so too early to say...
Beetroot has done well. A few small ones probably down to careless/incomplete thinning, but plenty of cricket balls have been produced.

I only wish one of the 12 pumpkins/winter squash would set fruit!

I've got two pots with beetroot.
B&Q compost with Boltardy in one sown in early June all about 3 inches high with no chance of a globe.
Wickes compost with Crosby Egyptian sown 29th June and should be harvesting by the end of the week.
I found toms, beans and lettuce in the B&Q compost were way behind those planted in the Wickes compost so won't buy in B&Q again, maybe cheaper but not so good.

My Beets are still growing, but we are eating the best Parsnips and Carrots I can ever remember growing.

I found the B&Q to be more coarse and woody than the more fluffy Wickes and what has happened with the recent rainy weather is I'm finding some tomatoes sprouting from the B&Q tubs, maybe their sterilisation process isn't up to scratch. Strange though it didn't happen with my watering but the same as on my banking, no weeds until the rains came.
