I tried two varieties last year, a hard neck (Lautrec Wight) and a softneck (Provence Wight, I think). The hardnecks were disappointing, but the softnecks did well so I think I will stick with those. Got plenty saved from last year

My harvest this year - Mha. Each head was smaller than a slightly smaller than average regular clove.

Last year on 25th October, I planted Red Duke from Kings Seeds. They went straight into the ground and we have a clay soil here. Harvested good sized bulbs this summer even though the tops were hit by rust. I'm going to replant the largest bulb but as yet, haven't decided which variety to buy

I planted germidour yesterday. I have a clay veg patch which I'm improving with organic matter. I've mulched part of the bed where some early spuds came out with about 6" of home made compost a few weeks ago, was going to leave it for the worms to work in over winter but decided instead to plant shallots and garlic in to it instead. I've mixed a little bfb in also but that'll be it for fertiliser now.
I'm hoping the compost will give a free draining layer so we shouldn't get rotting unless it gets really wet.

Just visited the local Garden Centre and even though I wasn't going to, I purchased 3 heads of 'Marco 'garlic for £2.99
I'll give it a go in a raised bed on my new plot and see how it goes.
I did intend to just use shop bought garlic as I have had very little joy with named varieties in the past.I still might do a bit of a trial with an 'Aldi special' garlic planted at the same time though! My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order

Is it too early to plant out yet?
