For no other reason other than I had them in the shed ready to plant and I managed to find a spare half hour I planted mine Wednesday. Not sure what the risks wo ld be of planting too early.
My thinking is they put on some growth in autumn, go dormant when it gets too cold then start again in spring. If they're fully Hardy then only the fiercest of winters should be a problem even if the plants are quite big when they slow down for winter.
I suppose it will depend on whether we have a mild winter or not for garlic. If it has a lt of top growth going into winter it could be susceptible to frosts or build up of snow snapping the foliage.
Just have to hope for no snow or frosts!

Thanks. Just ordered some autumn planting bulbs. I might stagger them a month apart for my SFG.

Or you can put a little tent over it if you're really worried. Or I suppose mulch with straw but then you couldn't make mini-yurts if you done that.
