  • When to clear cucumber plant

Is it too early to clear cucs? Harvested a cucumber this morning but can’t see new baby ones or flowers - will it start again now that I’ve taken out that cucumber,” or is it too late for it to give more fruit now?

These are outside, WG? Night-time temperatures are now down to 10C (low 50Fs in old money) and likely to sink lower, you might get the odd flower but I'd doubt much by way of produce will develop. I had 3 in the conservatory, they tend to produce manically at first (so any visitor isn't allowed to leave without a cucumber, preferably two) but then slow down to zilch. I've already given up on two of them and taken them out, the third has one small cucumber that might just be ready for the local show in early September and then that too will end its days. It's Autumn (officially from Saturday according to the Met Office, astronomers base the seasons on the equinoxes so their "autumn" doesn't begin until 26 Sept). Either way I'm in "prepare for Winter mode" so cucumbers are on the way out.

In the greenhouse, mine are still producing fruit and flowers, though much slower than previously - as soon as they stop flowering they will be compost
Same as the toms, really... not hanging about for the odd late flower/fruit, this year I've other stuff to plant in their place ...

Thank you both! Yes, this is an outside cucumber. I’ve not had much from it this year maybe due to lack of water, but will pull it out now to make way for some autumn lettuce. Thanks again!
