  • Help, suggestions and advice please my lovelies.

The last few years have seen us growing less and less due to home circumstances.

I know that next year will be even less than this one.

I don’t want to stop completely as who can moan about a home grown carrot or radish but now need to ‘do a tiny’ bit as a treat.

I have a few 12in square by 14 deep pots so was thinking of using them for my veggie treats. Carrots, lettuce, radish, spinach etc.

Any other brain waves really would be appreciated as how to grow a few with little effort.

I'm finding growing in pots is too time consuming and if you go on a holiday they die, much prefer raised beds and I am making one that will be a foot square by 18 inches deep, so they won't have to be massive.

Going anywhere won’t be happening and I know what you mean about pots and water.

Do you have an outside tap you could 'trickle water' from most of the time?....save you lugging watering cans on a daily basis?
Can you buy plug plants from anywhere so you avoid the seedling stage? (Thinking lettuce etc)

Autumn sowed broad bean & meteor peas are ver little effort because rain takes care of them over winter, sow them direct in a bed & do nothing for a few months, then they grow peas & beans

                For next year:

Cut and come again lettuce, radishes, chives instead of spring onions. Some edible flowers. Tumbling Tom type tomatoes. And there's a salad.

Dwarf French beans would be a must for me. And maybe a courgette plant or two suitable for growing in pots. Both would provide a relatively productive harvest.

Carrots always taste good, but I'm never convinced by productivity in pots. A lot of effort for not much reward in terms of size of crop.

For overwintering now, spinach, lamb's lettuce and other lettuce.

Love Jungle Jane's idea of peas. I'd probably pass on broad beans, but that's just me.

                Good luck, Lumpy.

I did have a first delivery of a particular ‘Rocket’ product this year. I cancelled the rest as although the plants were in lovely condition it was either more than we needed or not what we’d have chosen.

After a bit of a desparate think I might just snaffle the half metre square raised bed as well as a pot or two.

I really dislike buying ready grown plantlets but find myself like, many others relying on the convince.

Well Lumpy, can you give us a couple of clues. How much is little effort? If you weren't limited what would you want to grow? What are your faves and what will you miss the most. We might be able to suggest varieties or alternatives/replacements.

I suppose it comes down to -
Half a dozen beetroots, 12 carrots, spinach for 4-6 meals, 24 radish, 18 spring onions, 1 kale, 3 lettuce and my hanging baskets for toms.
OH’s eating habits have changed to the point of daft but even a tiny amount would keep me happy.

Hello Cad, long time no gossip.
Except for a short stint on a Lottie we have only used the garden. Sadly, the space has had to be more and more restricted due to ‘things’ going on.

Try perpetual spinach in a flower border/edge of a gravel path ...doesn't need any attention so long as it gets rained on from time to time
