  • Adding more asparagus to bed

I think I'm up to 5 surviving asparagus crowns (out of ten planted). Considering what they have had to put up with (being left in the box for three weeks on delivery, drought, volunteer potatoes everywhere) I think that's OK.

Obviously, I had planned for ten. Can I just plant another five in the gaps? (OK they'll be a year behind, but over the productive life of the bed, is that material?)

Are there other issues? (I've planted Mondeo(?) a version that doesn't need pollinating)

I don't see why not. Rootle out the failures in case they've rotted then pop the new ones in.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

The main issue I've found is the ferns getting light, if they were on outside of a bed they are fine but if in the middle the older ones ferns have over grown them

I did this year, added six more to the three survivors from year before (first year planned ones), five did okay, one failed, so I’ll probably add another couple to hopefully fill the gap next year.

I worked on the basis that the year difference would be immaterial in the end and I’d rather try to fill the gaps.

Only issue I’d be worried about would be disturbing the roots of the surrounding plants - probably not a big deal if you’re careful.
