  • Planting Shallots

On another thread there is a discussion on when to plant garlic.

Has anyone planted shallots this early? If so what were the results like? Any problems?

I am planning on planting about 10 sets near my early planted Garlic to see what happens but before I do I just wanted to check if anyone will say no and tell me why.

    many thanks

    Bill

Good question. I was planning to plant shallots too but have only ever done them in spring previously. I bought a collection of garlic, onions and shallots, so it seems a shame to not plant them.

Hopefully someone will come along with a more useful reply...

I tried last autumn with saved bulbs but quite a few (about 1/2) rotted and left gaps in the rows. I saved some till early spring (and some rotted in store so were not planted but not 50%) and these did a lot better. If I grow some next year, I'll plant out in spring. It might depend on the variety like onions so , if you bought some, I'd read the packet.

I plant both garlic and shallots around mid-autumn but my onions go in around March to April depending on the weather.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

          Shallots

Ok this sounds silly but I think I remember saying on a thread that I would plant out some Shallots to see how they do. Darned if I can find that thread (Don't try to find it VC, thank you anyway).

So I have planted out 20 of my smaller shallots to see if they grow(survive really) and if they get bigger (well bigger than the ones I have planted). I put them in an area where the compost heap has been for the last 3 months. So I will see how it goes and let you all know. I will order in some new shallots to plant around boxing day and compare the results next June (that's if I remember where the thread is and that I need to tell you).

By the way the garlic that I planted early is doing well. Hoping for a good crop.

Its pointless telling me not to, because I always disobey

I planted some shallots today too, little ones that were too small to bother peeling, so I planted them instead.

I planted mine too at the weekend! I checked my variety and the were Jermor which are overwintering. We shall see the results (or not if they just rot away or don't grow, like some of my garlic).
Might plant some new sets in spring too

A couple of years ago. I dug up my shallots in September and put them on the path to dry out. I forgot about them and it wasn't until about this time of year I found them and they had loads of white roots growing from them. Not daunted, I split them up and planted them then and they did well for me the following year.

Which reminds me, I must go and retrieve my shallots from the weeds on my old plot!

I thought I'd sorted shallots out for autumn planting when I ordered some in the T&M p&p w/end - turns out they aren't coming until the end of January Oh well!

I'll just cover the bed for now then, I suppose
