  • Lost my best mate x

Dad passed away last week having fought a losing battle with cancer , a retired farmer as his father before him he was a very keen gardener and allotment holder for over 30 years

Dad introduced me to gardening over the last couple of years and I have loved it and the connection it gives me with him

It will take many years before I am anywhere near his standards however ..

I am trying to promote an uptake of unused allotments in Bishops Stortford at various sites throughout this busy town of which Dads will sadly be part of

I have got a meeting with the local allotment society on Sunday and hope to help them promote the allotments including Dads , I have spoken to an estate agent today who are wiling to help publicise the cause and will garner support from the Mayor and the local paper

Has anyone got any other ideas ?

I would like him to leave some sort of gardening legacy

My condolences to you and your family.
Your father has already left a gardening legacy in giving you your love of gardening. Every time you sow a seed or turn the earth, you'll remember how he did it.
Inspiring others to do the same is a wonderful idea and I wish you well. x

when he was admitted to hospital in January I found a whole load of Pelargonium Grandiflorum cuttings on one of his sunny windowsills so I took them home and then potted them on in the spring and then planted them out in pots and they have given a fantastic display
I have taken about another 40 cuttings which are now tucked up in the greenhouse along with the original plant

Thinking of you and your family at the sad time Billy.

After reading here on the vine I'd always thought there were long waiting lists so its a shame theres unused plots, hopefully with the publicity they will soon have new tenants.

Talking to the Allotment society there are loads
The site where Dad was has 8 lots of which 6 will be available now and I think they need a bit of enthusiasm and energy put into the whole thing
My sister has been using the allotment to grow pumpkins on and is amazed at the quality of the soil which is a result of Dads hard work
Just be a shame if it is all overgrown next year

What a moving tribute to your dad (Billy, I presume). I'm sure he enjoyed the connection too, and the chance to share his love of growing with you. Memories are treasure.

Lovely Billy, what a wonderful way to remember him. I still have a plant that my Gramdmother always grew and I have passed my three score years and ten.

sorry to hear of your loss.

I think the flowers look a lovely reminder.

perhaps you could put a bench up (with a plaque on) so you can sit and admire the fruits of the work you've both done over the years?
