  • In the same hole - daft idea?

Having suggested to Jay-ell that he sows some broad bean seeds in the same hole as he plants a potato,I've been thinking about other time/space saving combinations to try.
This isn't intercropping but actually sowing together in the same place.

I'm going to sow a few calendula seeds in with the broad beans. Apparently they make good companion plants and I like the thought of broad beans emerging from a sea of orange marigolds. Maybe they'd deter blackfly - who knows?

Lettuce seeds or basil or both when planting out tomato seedlings.

Carrots and chives. Could be fiddly - tiny seeds.

    Any more ideas?

I like that idea! I'm imagining me sowing lots of things by broadcast, rather than in drills (I can't do straight lines, they make me OCD), so companion planting would be awesome! Following this with interest

          Cabbage and nasturtiums

I won't be joining in. More than happy to help with suggestions

Sounds a good idea but the logical part of my brain is screaming 'root competition for nutrients'

As long as the plants "grow" differently, that is, you wouldn't plant a carrot with a turnip as they would jostle for room, and are from different families, so their nutritional needs are different, I think its worth a shot.
I have so many different nutty plans I'm losing track of them all. Might have to dream up a Master/Mistress plan. (Added the Mistress to be politically correct)
