  • Let's grow Easy-Peasy Pea Shoots

Since there are a few itchy fingers around at the moment, shall we grow some pea shoots together?

All you need are some dried peas (they can be Leo type from the supermarket) or leftover peas that you have in seed packets.
You'll also need a seed tray or plastic box with drainage holes.
    Some compost or cotton wool.

    Are you ready?

Put a layer of peas in the bottom of the tray, just a pea deep!

    Soak the peas overnight.

Put some compost or cotton wool in the bottom of the tray.

Next day, pour the soaked peas into the tray.

Put somewhere light like a windowsill.

Make sure they don't dry out.

Cut the pea shoots when a few inches high ( only takes a few days) and eat fresh or cooked.

Like I said - easy peasy.

I haven't grown them for a long time either but, if you take the growing tips, the rest will branch out and grow more.
Last time I did it, I planted the tray of seeds out after taking a few cuts and ended up picked peas off them.

I usually get a couple of cuts of the peas, and like VC says when they get woody you can leave them to grow on and you get to eat the pea pods.

I love fresh pea shoots, and I often do this on the windowsill. When I'm done, I let them grow on a bit and let the chickens have them. The shoots are lovely in a salad (though I can't say I eat many salads), and chucked in last minute into casseroles for a bit of fresh crunch, or in soups.

And they absolutely grow well all year around - they're not at all fussy. I always use Leo peas, but I don't soak them. I just bung in some compost in a low tray, peas on top, then a bit more compost and keep it well watered.

I try to sow an handful every 3 weeks but I usually forget then we've run out of shoots.

Unfortunately I’m restricted to a no plants inside I’ve managed to persuade OH to allow my overwintered chillies (and previously an orchid) but I think this would be a step tooo far

I've sown some today! At least I think they're peas haha In a small pot in a nice outter pot in my lovely victorian wrought iron plant stand at the bottom of the kitchen. Which joins a hanging basket I've taken in for the winter, another hanging plant that's outgrown it's old place, a spider plant and last weeks tray of star anise (which now have three pieces of Christmas cactus that broke off the mother plant cause the flowers are huge this year!
