  • Butternut Squash with a hint of Melon & marrow texture ?

During the summer, experimented with seed pulled from a commercial (Italian) Butternut Squash. Dried out seed scattered on a mound of rotted manure early June. Anyway bunch of the seeds germinated then I thinned them down to the strongest 12 then eventually about 6 plants spread out. From these got x2 fruits that matured.

These plants were only a couple of meters from my outdoor Pepito Melon F1...

Also had a small wasp nest in my melon dalek for about 4 weeks around the flowering period for both plants. Obviously attracted by the sweet smell of the young melons.

    Will describe these Butternut Squashes

Butternut Squash shape but with mottled dark green skin which yellowed slightly over the last few weeks indoors. Hasn't rotted and has kept well.

The strange bit was when I cut into the squash I smelt melons and the bright yellow flesh wasn't as dense as normal and when cooked, they cooked like marrow and tasted like a slightly sweet marrow.

    Twilight zone territory...

Sounds like the original seeds were from an F1 variety. In which case, you have propagated a completely new variety. A cross with your melon would only show up in the seeds of the butternut? you propagated when planted next year methinks.

It sounds as if the original flower, that produced the original squash and seeds, was an f1 or got cross pollinated.
As already said cross pollination this year wouldn't effect this year's fruit, only next year's.

All the research papers say that Cucumis melo (your melon)
            https://www.wholesale.molesseeds.co....-pepito-vme45/

cannot cross with Cucurbita moschata your butternut.

Picture of both Squashes. Texture slightly softer than either a Butternut squash or Kuri squash.

They were both from different plants but seem the same.

They didn't taste of melon, there was just a slight whiff of melon on cutting
