Buying chilli seeds by the individual seed variety?

I am looking to buy maybe 5 seeds of one chilli type, 5 of another, 5 of another and 5 of another, as opposed to the usual pack size which seems to be about 20 of a single variety.

Are there any reputable online seed sellers that will let you customise what you order to this degree?

I haven’t come across any, but have successfully grown jalapenos from an opened packet which had been in my sisters garage for a couple of years - so a pack of 20 might last....

Or, if you prefer, grow all 20 and give the seedlings away to friends, family, local charity fundraiser plant stalls etc? If you’re lucky you might even get some other varieties as swaps ;-)

As a general rule, commonly available seeds are cheaper and in larger quantities than more unusual ones.
Most of us would complain if there were only 5 seeds in a packet!

You would always sow several more than you want and perhaps you can swap/split packs with a friend?

These seeds are mostly sold in packs of 10's.
As a new grower, unsure when the time is best to sow, having some extra seed as back up if germination/ growing on isnt successful the first time around won't hurt.
At averaging just a pound a pack it's not really a big deal if you dont use them all either.

Just to echo VC's comment, the more exclusive or rare, so the price goes up or the quantity of seeds available to each punter is reduced. Worth shopping around though, one retailer's "very rare" isn't always the case. Though I do recall when Pink Tiger was first launched several years ago, it was something like £3.99 for four seeds! It's come down slightly since, but it's still not a strain carried by more than a handful of retailers if that. Jalapeno on the other hand sell everywhere from your local GC to the supermarkets (some) to Wilkos, the latter selling 20+ seeds for just 99p.
As long as you have somewhere dry and cool'ish to store any unused seed, buy a couple of standard packets and keep the leftover for another year. Over time you'll acquire enough packets to warrant a specific box to keep them all in (planned or not), and this'll become your treasure trove

Not even I need to grow a whole packet of chilli seeds ( and I'm mildly obsessed! ).
I've sown seeds from the same packet for 3 years running with no problems.
If you limit yourself to small quantity packets you could be limiting yourself on varieties as well. You don't want to do that when your chilli obsession kicks in...........it will kick in

I have used this company before with no problems and even they have 10 seeds to a pack. I know most people prefer to stick to UK suppliers.

The cost between a small pack and a larger pack is negligible in many cases. Like everyone else I've been using up open seed packs for several years.
