  • Leggy Seedlings

I apologise if this has already been answered.

I've started this year in growing my own with my first allotment.

This year I did start too early (very keen you see) and put all my seed into trays in a plastic greenhouse.

They all got really long and leggy - and this seemed to carry through to my plants - they all seemed long and leggy. I assumed this was because I started too early.

Anyway over summer I Freecycled and got myself a proper greenhouse - and thought I'd try some late lettuce and spring cabbage last week.

All my seedlings seem really long and weak - am I watering too much? is it too warm? (my greenhouse only gets morning sun and the max it's been up to is 30c)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated - so I can get this sorted for next years onslaught

    Many thanks

    Stuart

Weak and spindly seedlings grow like that because of too much heat and not enough light. Neither lettuce nor cabbage need particularly warm conditions to germinate so you would be better off putting them somewhere cooler and lighter.

Hello SJA, I'm with Cutecumber on this. I think your seedlings are too warm with not enough light. Lettuce doesn't need that kind of heat. You could try some more now. Just plant them in a tray and leave them outdoors in a suitable place. I use the kitchen windowsill.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Many thanks to both of you.

I will try again, this time outside of the greenhouse and see how this works.
