Deffo too big for small growing chilli varieties- that's a big as most of my pots get.
What variety would flourish in such a big pot size? I have expanded my horizons from small pots on the windowsill to 10 litre monster pots in my spare room (my chilli growing addiction has kicked in before I've even grown anything). I'm looking for something around the 75,000 SHU mark, easy to grow and very prolific. Would a bird's eye chilli or some other Thai variant be more suitable?

How high are your windowsills, how tall are the pots?

        The pot is:
        27cm diameter top
        18cm diameter bottom
        24cm high

On a table in front of the window, the window is 120cm tall

Chilli suggestions that would maximise this space appreciated
        Thanks!

On a table? Can you post a photo of your set up? You can get very straggly plants if you grow too far away from good light.

Which way does the window face? It needs to be a sunny window.

South facing window, here are 2 pics. Do you think this setup will work?

You really need them against the glass or the plants will be leaning towards the light.

Oh dear, okay...would rotating them as they lean not be a solution or do you really not think this setup is viable?

Even against the glass you'd have to rotate the plants. The best way to find out is to try it next year.

How about this, rigged up closer to the window? Basically on the windowsill so should be better?

Thanks, what kind of hot (75k ish) prolific chilli would take advantage of the space in the pot here?

I think it's best to try what you fancy. If you are using large pots the plants will grow bigger. If I keep a lemon drop in a flower bucket they will grow huge, if they are in a pot smaller the plant won't be so big. It's a suck it and see situation.
As for planting on, I think you will need to plant up in pot sizes as the minute you stick a tiny plant in the middle of that pot it will start growing towards the light. Personally I would stick to your basket of fire idea and use a smaller pot.

Here is a lemon drop on the window in my kitchen - small approx 12cm diameter pot. They spill over the pot edge and can get very straggly. The more weak green growth you get the more attractive it is for aphids. Click image for larger version

Here's 3 plants - Habs. Brought indoors for seed saving. They sprawl due to lack of light. Branches become long and straggly and the plants need lots of support - several bamboo canes in each of the pots. They will grow into each other but each plant was well over 4 foot wide by the time they finished and they hit the ceiling.

You don't get anymore pods either as the branches are so sprawling. I would use a smaller pot and grow an ornamental.

Leaf size of a hab grown indoors

If you don't fancy basket of fire - although for me that would be my first choice for indoors, I would look at an ornamental variety.

Royal black has small pods and has an upright growth.

Or tricolour variegata. Again has an upright growth with small pods.
