Garlic

I bought two types of garlic recently from the garlic farm. Planted some in the raised beds and a few in pots in the greenhouse. All of one type- Carcassonne Wight have come through but only a couple of shoots of the Picardy wight have come through. Is that normal?

how long have they been planted ? i think its roughly 3-4 weeks after planting you get growth above ground

Annie, that can happen even from cloves from two of one kind. The Picardy might just naturally be slower though. Have any of the ones that don't show top growth developed roots?

Will check back in my book to see when I planted. Feels like at least a month. Should I fumble around a bit to see if any of the planted cloves have roots?

I agree with AP...I find some focus on root production before top growth. Nothing wrong with giving them a few more weeks

I noticed some are later than others,it is worrying when half the beds empty but then one day when you forget about them,they’re all there

You would be better to leave well alone personally the only veg. I would check by fumbling about the roots are potatoes with anything else you could cause damage to tender roots

Patience, patience and more patience.
Things grow when they're ready to and this cold weather doesn't encourage anything to stick its head out of the ground.
Wait another month or two and see if they've caught up!

Will not touch them. I have no patience though! Best thibg about growing veg apart from the eating is when the little shoots come through. Checked my book and I planted them on 3 Nov.

I love the germination stage too which I why I like to sow a couple of seeds on kitchen roll, just so that I can watch them sprouting.

So resisted the temptation to fumble around and came back after Xmas to find almost all are now through. Really hoping they work as I really like garlic and have very little else growing at this time of year. This patience thing is tough though.

I'm thinking of spreading some chicken poo pellets around my garlic and my Spring Cabbage, just to let them know that Spring is around the corner and they need to think about putting growth on.

Update. My garlic in gh and outside are both doing fine. Slight yellowing to some of the leaves but strong growth. Just a bit worried as had a wee fumble of one yesterday and didn’t feel like there was an actual bulb there, felt more like a spring onion. Didn’t want to mess around with any more but at what point does the bulb expand? Hoping this isn’t going to be another allium disaster for me.

The bulbs will expand later on in the year. The plant will bulk them up so that they can go dormant and survive through till they regrow. At this point in the year they will be focusing on leaf production so make sure that they have enough nitrogen.

The thickness of the stem at the soil will be an indication of the size of the head that you can expect - thicker stems equate to bigger heads.

Is there a particular feed I should give them. Had some Bfb which I scattered around but will need to get more.
