  • I'm joining you on this thread this year never grown chillies from seed before!
Blame SP for challenging me. She's promised me that these aren't hot :-

    Trinidad perfume
Jalapeno Fooled you (I'm a bit worried about that one as I think SP may be fooling me)
    Apple Crisp "very low heat"

I'd better read up on what to do next!

I'll get my own back, don't worry. There'll be another challenge that you won't be able to refuse.

Exactly! And that link you put up the peach hab looked quite orange! So how orange is an orange hab ?
                  I'm confused......again.............or is that still

                  • I've grown orange hab a few times- it's bright orange.
But I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the peach and the pink
Wondering if I had two pink? It was only when I made jam with just the "pink" and tasted it and realised something was amiss. Ate a whole pod of the plant - no heat at all.

                    • Hi all, I'm still sorting out my grow list, but so far:
Aji Peruvian - these did so well last year!
Rocotto, yellow and red - My rocotto succumbed to frost before ripening last time :-(
Peach ghost - I picked up a load of these at a market on holiday is Australia, and they taste gooooood and hot hot hot
Padron - nom nom nom, I could eat these every day
Biquino, yellow and red - I'd love to have a go at sweet pickling these
Jalapenos - to make that cowboy candy recipe that someone posted here
Habanero, chocolate and orange - becuase they taste so good

Most will be from seed, but I'll order some plugs later on too and might add a few other varieties as we go along.

I've also overwintered 10 superhots (2x 7 pot primo, bhut jolokia, 3x reapers, peach scorpion, chocolate doughlah, moruga brainstrain, fatali) and a trinidad perfume, all of which are thriving. Miraculously, some amarillo plants are still alive in the greenhouse, which might make it (probably not). I'm thinking of splashing out on some chilli focus and a couple of quadgrows too.

Very impressive on the overwinters. Did you get good crops from your superhots?

Not familiar with Aji Peruvian so just had a google - looks good. Perhaps a bit like Aji Omnicolor that I grew two years ago.

Last year Chris gave me a selection of seeds with a Yellow Scotch Bonnet, Orange Habanero and Elysium Oxide in the mix. None of these grew... I think this was because of the propagator was only at 20C. Now sitting at 24, but could up temperature it advised.

Going to sow my other C.annum seeds during February due to space restrictions.
Generally speaking the hotter chillies do need higher germination temps and 20C was almost certainly not enough. 24C will be better, why not try at that and increase it if they don't germ after a couple of weeks?

February is fine for annuums, they should have plenty of time to grow and fruit (as long as you don't then fail to pot them up like I did last year.)

Not really. I got a fair few reapers before bringing them in, but the rest had to ripen under lights, which ripened what was there, three peach scorpions, two douglah, half a dozen bhuts and primos, five or so moruga brainstrains and two fatalli. All pretty small pods, but very pungent. Overwintering has been a pain, a constant battle with aphids, but the plants are happy with plenty of new growth and even a couple of buds. Hopefully today's dose of neem oil will see off the last of the aphids so that I can plant some seeds without having them devour the babies.

The aji Peruvian are great. A bit bigger and longer than the aji omnicolour, and it doesn't ripen in as many stages, but more prolific with a similar good taste. Both plants were enourmous and the freezer is full of them.

This is the downfall with overwintering chillies, it's very difficult to get rid of the aphids When they have arrived. I wouldn't grow any new ones in the same room as it will be highly unlikely that they won't attract them too. Seedlings can't cope with the attack and if you inadvertently introduce them to your green house early in the season it's not likely that you will get rid of them.
