Chillies - growing and overwintering 2019

My outside plants look dodo-ish.

I'm not doing so well with germinating this year. I have sown 16 varieties and only 4 have germinated so far. Last year I only failed with a couple of varieties , one of which was red Bubblegum. This year I've tried again with seeds from a different source and they still haven't grown as yet. I'm going away next week so I need them to pop before I go, otherwise they will be sitting in the dark for up to a fortnight.

They get leggy when the room temps are too high, grow on in cool conditions and they should be fine. As soon as they have germinated they get taken off the heat and put in the windowsill. They aren't near any radiators.
I always start my tomatoes mid Feb so my chillies need to be done and dusted by then.

Cool I thought it was lack of light that caused them to be leggy, didn't realise too much warmth did too

So finally got around to starting my chilli sowing..Only did a few, will sow more tomorrow..
So today I have sowed:

Your plan for sowing looks good. Personally I don't worry about sowing jalapeño till February because they grow quite quickly.

Cool, I'll get the Habaneros started this weekend then! Jalapenos I'll have to wait a little longer for anyway as I realised last night that I've bought the Tam Jalapenos which are supposed to be milder, so I've order some normal ones .

Grow lights I've got one of these. Which I'm very happy with. But it's quite bright!

Thanks. I'll have a see how I get on then - looks like a lot of ones are available on Amazon Prime so I can always get one next day delivery if it's looking like I need one

It's the combination. Warmth makes them grow and lack of light makes them stretch. Too cold and they won't really grow much although might still elongate to search for light.

What do you do with them all?

Last year it worked quite nice as I pickled the jalapenos, made hot sweet chilli sauce from the bonnets and dried the cayennes (as well as using them fresh in between). This year I'll have fewer each of more varieties so assume I'll end up mixing them up in sauces etc.

Might be fun to see what i get. As long as I can work out how to post pictures maybe i could get some help trying to work out what the chilli are? Am also tempted to try lemon drop as lots of people on this thread seem to like it. Have a few orange habaneros that i'm going to try to overwinter.

What do you do with them all?

Last year it worked quite nice as I pickled the jalapenos, made hot sweet chilli sauce from the bonnets and dried the cayennes (as well as using them fresh in between). This year I'll have fewer each of more varieties so assume I'll end up mixing them up in sauces etc.

I make quick a lot of chilli powder. Mixed chillies, every batch is a unique blend ( what ever I have ready at the time ). But always hotter than you'll get in your average shop. And make lot of cowboy candy with the jalapeños.

I looked at these too but think going to be quite a challenge to identify any that you grow each year.

There's me getting excited because some of my seedlings have got there first true leaves coming

I've bought a pack. Don't know why, no real room to grow them. Just...couldn't resist.
